Cleveland State University released the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report for 2023, which includes information on crime report data from 2020 through 2022, as well as crime prevention initiatives, emergency preparedness and notifications, procedures for reporting crime, and support services available to students. 

Crime Report Data

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), CSU releases reports of aggravated assault, arson, burglary, dating violence, domestic violence, hate crime, illegal weapons possession, intimidation, larceny-theft, liquor law violations, motor vehicle theft, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, manslaughter by negligence, robbery, sexual assault, simply assault, stalking, and vandalism.

In the report, there is a progression of changes in the crime reports including no reports of motor vehicle theft on campus in 2020, one report in 2021 and twelve in 2022. Burglary reports also increased from three reports on campus in 2020 to three in 2021 to nine in 2022. 

Drug abuse violations for disciplinary referrals also saw an increase on campus from zero in 2020 to five in 2021 to 11 in 2022. Stalking reports on campus have increased from one in 2020 to three in 2021 to four in 2022.

The number of disciplinary referrals for liquor law violations on campus increased dramatically between 2020 to 2021, from eight to 42, but saw a decline in 2022 to 31.

There were two reports of rape in 2020, two in 2021 and three in 2022 on campus, and the number of fondling sex offenses was the same as rape.

Reports of dating violence on campus increased from one in 2020 to two in 2021 to three in 2022. One report of domestic violence was made on campus each year from 2020 to 2023.  

From 2020 through 2022, there have been no instances reported of murder and non-negligent manslaughter, negligent manslaughter, hate crimes, statutory rape, or incest. 

There were no fires in on-campus student housing facilities from 2020 to 2022.

Services for Students

Resources for students include medical assistance, counseling services, legal aid and more. Contact information for each of the services is listed in the report. 

Other safety initiatives include the Community Oriented Policing Sector Program, Rape Aggression Defense Program, Active Shooter Response Training, Alcohol Awareness Program and the Viking Safety Escort Service. 

The CSU Police Department, having full police responsibility and authority, is available at 1840 Chester Ave. year round. Within the jurisdiction of the university, CSU police officers have the same powers as municipal police officers, including arrests. Their jurisdiction boundaries surround Payne Ave. through Carnegie Ave. and East 30th St. through East 14th St.. 

For an emergency on campus, individuals are encouraged to call 911 and ask for CSU police.
