Three members of athletics will cost CSU a total of $705,000 in salary per year

Cleveland State University will pay Athletic Director Scott Garrett, Women’s Basketball Head Coach Chris Kielsmeier, and new Men’s Basketball Head Coach Daniyal Robinson a total of $705,000 per year in base salary, according to public records request by The Cauldron.

Garrett signed a four-year contract extension in February 2022 under former President Harlan Sands that would keep him at Cleveland State until June 30, 2026. 

“We have established aggressive goals for athletics in our set of CSU 2.0 priorities, and Scott is the perfect leader to move us forward,” Sands said in a statement at the time. “Under Scott’s continuing leadership, we are confident that our best days still lie ahead.”

Kielsmeier extended his contract in May 2022, keeping him with the university until April 30, 2027. 

“We are so excited by the positive trajectory of the women’s basketball program under Coach Kielsmeier’s leadership here at Cleveland State over the last four years,” Garrett said in a statement at the time.

Robinson became Garrett’s second biggest hire after taking over for former head coach Dennis Gates in April. Robinson signed a five-year deal tying him to the university until April 30, 2027.

“Daniyal’s vision for CSU basketball fully aligns with our foundation of championship success in the classroom, in the community, and on the court,” Garret said in a statement at the time. “We look forward to fully supporting Coach Robinson’s success and to continuing our accelerating momentum under his leadership.”

According to a public record request, Garrett’s base salary is $205,000 annually. Garrett will have the opportunity to earn an additional $15,000 per year in supplemental salary if he is still employed by the university on June 30th each year for the next four years.

Garrett can also earn another $45,000 in total for longevity incentives if he is employed on June 30th for 2024, 2025, and 2026. 

If Garrett completes his contract with Cleveland State, he could earn a total of $925,000 in pay, not accounting for bonuses. Please read his attached contract below to learn more about Garrett’s bonuses.

Chris Kielsmeier – Head Coach of women’s basketball

Kielsmeier base salary is set for $175,000 through April 30, 2023. Afterward, each contract year, he is eligible for salary review according to a public record request. 

He is also eligible for $5,000 annually in additional compensation for each contract year he is employed with the university for his “level of commitment and effort required by Coach to fulfill his duties.”

Kielsmeier will also receive a monthly vehicle stipend of $600 for each month he’s employed by the university. 

Kielsmeier is also eligible for bonuses related to his and the team’s performance on the court and academically. Please read his attached contract below to learn more about his bonuses.

Daniyal Robinson – Head Coach of men’s basketball 

According to another public record request, Robinson’s base salary is $325,000 annually. If the program plays in the NCAA tournament at any point, Robinson’s base salary raises to $400,000 for all remaining years left on his contract.

Robinson will also receive an extra $25,000 per year for media obligations as well as a $600 monthly vehicle stipend that he is employed by the university. 

Robinson, like Kielsmier, is also eligible for bonuses related to his and the team’s performance on the court and academically. Please read his attached contract below to learn more about his bonuses.
