The Kardashians: A family of role models

Pop culture often leads to many diverging opinions: Were Ross and Rachel on a break?; Who’s better, Christina or Britney?; Disney vs. Pixar; Star Wars vs. Star Trek; and much more. One of the most contentious topics in pop culture since 2009 centers on one family- the Kardashians. With a popular reality television show that survived 20 seasons, love them or hate them, they were impossible to ignore. Despite a controversial start with a scandalous sex tape and suggestive photoshoots, the Kardashians have become a force to be reckoned with.

The Kardashian family has become role models, especially for young women. Their success in business is remarkable, not only individually, but as a family. As this article puts it, “to succeed in business despite the ill-will of half a nation- that’s miraculous.” Their personal and familial success are proof that women can be successful in business not only in the U.S., but across the globe.

The family is not only an example of business-savvy women but also of charitable people– as hard as that is to believe. The family has addressed many contentious topics on their show, including trans issues with Caitlyn Jenner, both sides of the gun debate, substance abuse, and racial justice issues. They have used their platform to bring awareness to these topics, not just to make money. In fact, they often use their money to support a variety of charities and causes, especially regarding cancer research and racial justice.

Kim Kardashian, arguably the most criticized of the group, gets most of her criticism from her apparent vanity and selfishness. However, she has turned a corner and began devoting the second half of her life to criminal justice reform. She has shown young women that they can do anything they set their minds to– whether it’s being a successful businesswoman, being a caring mother, etc. Like her family, she represents multiple values and forms of success, showing the world what women can really do.
